Addressing Teacher Shortages for a Brighter Educational Future

Interviews with Scott Croonquist, Association of Minnesota School Districts

In a recent MPR News interview as well as a television interview with KARE 11, Scott Croonquist, Executive Director of the Association of Metro School Districts, highlighted the challenging teacher shortages faced by Minnesota schools due to demographics and pandemic-related retirements. We are immensely grateful that Elevate Teaching was acknowledged in these discussions, signaling that our mission aligns with the critical issues affecting education.

In early August, metro schools reported particularly high levels of vacancies, and the problem is more concerning in rural Minnesota."It's higher than normal, for sure," said Scott Croonquist. "What's different this year is the extent of the vacancies, how many there are and how many districts are experiencing them. According to an open position survey conducted by the Minnesota School Boards Association between Aug. 3rd through 9th, schools in the seven-county Twin Cities metro area were still reporting 519 vacancies and 698 paraprofessional vacancies." It's an issue that St. Paul Public Schools tried to get out in front of last week, holding a hiring event that resulted in more than 60 applicants being offered a job within minutes. The district credits the unified hiring effort, a jump in starting pay for para positions, and a $4,000 hiring and retention bonus for special education jobs.

Scott's insights underscore the urgency of our initiative. Elevate Teaching is not just a campaign; it's a movement to transform the perception of teaching into a respected and appealing profession. The teacher shortages Scott mentioned are not mere statistics; they lead to larger class sizes and increased reliance on substitute teachers, impacting the quality of education.

Recognizing the urgency of these challenges, Elevate Teaching invites you to join us on this transformative journey. As ambassadors for our cause, together we can shift the narrative around education, attract new educators, and ensure that the learning environment is enriching for all students.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Scott Croonquist for recognizing Elevate Teaching in the public sphere. We are committed to rising to the occasion and tackling the pressing issues he highlighted. Join us today in shaping a brighter future for education.

Join our movement to empower teachers and uplift education for a better tomorrow.
